ThumbnailCreator lets you download any YouTube or Vimeo thumbnail in every available resolution — 4K, HD, SD and more — completely free, with no login required. Here is exactly how to use it.
Open YouTube in your browser or app, find the video whose thumbnail you want, and copy the full URL from the address bar. Any YouTube URL format works — see the supported formats table below.
Go to thumbnailcreator.online and paste your copied URL into the input box on the Thumbnail Downloader tab. You do not need to sign up or create an account.
Click the blue Fetch Thumbnail Images button. Within 1–2 seconds, all available resolutions for that video will appear in a grid below the button.
Each resolution card shows the image, its label (4K, HD, MQ etc.), and two buttons: Download saves the image file directly, and Copy URL copies the direct CDN link to your clipboard for use in other tools.
You can paste any of the following YouTube URL formats and they will all work:
| URL Type | Example |
|---|---|
| Standard watch URL | youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ |
| Short link | youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ |
| YouTube Shorts | youtube.com/shorts/dQw4w9WgXcQ |
| Embed URL | youtube.com/embed/dQw4w9WgXcQ |
| Bare video ID | dQw4w9WgXcQ |
| Vimeo | vimeo.com/123456789 |
YouTube stores up to 5 thumbnail sizes for each video. We display all of them at once so you can choose the one you need:
| Label | Resolution | Available on |
|---|---|---|
| 4K / MaxRes | 1920 × 1080 | Videos with custom HD thumbnails only |
| HD (sddefault) | 1280 × 720 | Most videos |
| HQ (hqdefault) | 480 × 360 | All videos |
| MQ (mqdefault) | 320 × 180 | All videos |
| Minimal (default) | 120 × 90 | All videos |
If the 4K / MaxRes size is not available for a video, the card will automatically hide itself and you will only see the sizes YouTube has stored. This is normal — older videos or videos without custom thumbnails may only have up to HD (1280×720).
Downloading a thumbnail from a YouTube Short works exactly the same way:
youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID.Note that Shorts thumbnails are typically cropped to a vertical (9:16) ratio inside YouTube's player, but the stored thumbnail file itself is the same horizontal JPG as a standard video. The actual aspect ratio shown will depend on the resolution.
Vimeo is also supported. Paste any Vimeo video URL (e.g. vimeo.com/123456789) into the input box and click Fetch. We use Vimeo's public oEmbed API to retrieve the highest available thumbnail URL and display it for download.
ThumbnailCreator also includes a free AI caption, bio, and hashtag generator for YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram. Here is how to use it:
Yes — completely free, no account required, no daily limits, and no watermarks on downloads.
Yes. Thumbnails are publicly accessible images. Downloading them for personal use, design research, or reference is legal. Do not reuse someone else's thumbnail commercially or claim it as your own work. See our Disclaimer for full details.
YouTube only generates a 4K (maxresdefault) thumbnail if the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail image at a high resolution. Older videos and auto-generated thumbnails are often limited to 1280×720. The card simply hides itself when that size does not exist.
No. All thumbnail fetching happens client-side in your browser. We never log or store the URLs you paste. See our Privacy Policy.
Paste any YouTube or Vimeo URL and get every resolution in under 2 seconds — free, no login needed.
